The Dun-Rite Excavating Office/Shop is a 19,576 square foot single-story building. It is separated into two main areas by a common dividing wall. The larger area is approximately rectangular in shape, 72’-0” x 146’-0”, with offsets in the east and south walls. The smaller area is rectangular in shape, 56’-0” x 100’-0”. Both areas contain office space at the south end of the building with mezzanine storage above. The remainder of the building is shop/warehouse space, with roll-up doors along the east and north walls.
Structurally, the building consists of a panelized roof system, open-web steel joists and joist girders, steel columns, concrete tilt-up walls, and concrete slabs-on-grade and spread footing foundations. The office/mezzanine area is wood-framed and separated from the tilt-up walls. Due to the lack of solid wall along the south face of the building, an interior concrete tilt-up wall was added at the interface between the office and shop space. Structural challenges encountered included walls with varying parapet heights, multiple re-entrant corners, and the design of high-load collector elements and connections.
